About This Piece
Art portrait as a wedding memory, captures one of life's most significant moments, commemorating the beauty and transition. From being a maiden or bachelor to becoming a wife or husband.
Moreover, it is a visual representation in an ornate frame, which consequently adds to the overall artistic value.
Additionally, about this sacred tells the Bible, Matthew 19:5-6. Where it states that a man shall leave his parents and cleave to his wife, thereby becoming one flesh.
This profound event has always captivated artists throughout history. As a result, it has led to numerous depictions of weddings in art.
Typically, these paintings feature wealthy and influential individuals. However, in my graphic painting, I have deliberately chosen to include, in this art portrait, people who hold a special place in my heart.
Their presence, in fact, is the driving force behind the creation of this print.
Finally, the portraits of the woman and man in a decorative frame, symbolise the abundance of experiences that await them on their new journey in life.
Captured forever, young and beautiful
Famous portraits of weddings are well-known in art history. They mainly concern people of power, namely kings and princes. In fact, the wedding was not only a private ceremony for the betrothed couple, but also a political event.
Consequently, court artists immortalised these moments in their paintings. Thanks to them, we can admire these events by visiting museums.
However, there are also wedding portraits of less important people. One of these, for instance, is the Portrait of the Arnolfini, painted in 1434 by Jan van Eyck. This art portrait is, notably, unusual. Art historian consider it as one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art. Therefore, it is a famous portrait. Currently, it resides in the National Gallery in London.
There, a visitor can observe a complex technique used by the artist.
Art portraits that inspire me
I mention this famous art portrait and its author here because he is a source of inspiration for me.
Despite the distance in time and the different techniques we used in depicting the newlywed couple, Jan van Eyck chose an oak board measuring 82 x 60 cm and oil paints.
In contrast, I chose paper and my own graphic techniques. Ultimately, I think it was the idea that this moment in a person's life is worth preserving in a painting.
