Black Couple in Red

From a distance, a couple who have lived together long enough look like a single form. This work is about what you see when you step closer.

Two simplified black figures stand so near they read as one shape. The black is incidental — this could be any couple, any two people sharing a life. But look closer: the form isn't sealed. There are indentations, small holes, and at the top the two heads diverge — the beginning of a break, or perhaps just the space where two minds refuse to be one. Closeness and friction live in the same shape, because a shared life brings conflict as surely as it brings comfort. I carved both truths into one silhouette.

The red is not a background. It is the space they live in — a field of intense feeling that presses on them from every side. And the whole scene sits inside a frame that crops them, even clipping the heads they would like to straighten. Our limitations, made visible. Yet within that frame — and this is what I most wanted to say — happiness for two is still possible.

The work is as tactile as it is visual: a ground of red acrylic, a linocut frame, the silhouettes pressed in black ink in my own printmaking technique, so the surface carries the pressure of the making the way a relationship carries its history.

Some see a quarrel beginning. Some see two people who have simply learned to stand together without disappearing. Both are right — the work holds both.

I dedicate this one to all couples.
