About This Piece

Two silhouettes, a man and a woman, standing close. He has put his arm around her — though you can't actually see it. There wasn't room in the frame; their bodies fill the whole picture, cropped at the edges, so you're left to guess at the embrace. That cropping is deliberate. By letting the figures spill past the borders, I wanted to give them scale — the greatness and monumentalism of the human being.

The deep black of the silhouettes carries something else too: eroticism, that inseparable part of who we are. Not shown, only signalled, in the weight and darkness of the forms.

This is the human figure as I use it throughout the series — simplified, flattened, charged with feeling rather than likeness.
