About This Piece

A man and a woman sit close together on an armchair, drawn in pen and ink — fine lines, subtle cross-hatching, soft shading. An ordinary moment, and an intimate one.

What drew me was the question of distance. Once two figures are on the page, how close can they come? Can the space between them be closed entirely? It can. You can even let them permeate one another until they read as a single figure. And isn't that what we want — we human beings who crave closeness and the warmth of another person?

The armchair does quiet work here, framing the two of them, holding them in one shape, giving the scene its depth.

So it's tender and a little nostalgic: the desire for connection that runs through all our relationships, set down in simple lines.

An original pen-and-ink drawing. Signed.
