About This Piece
Pearl Earring Lady – Girl without a Pearl Earrings It is not a portrait, but a ‘tronie’ – a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain type or character; in this case a girl in red in a red collarless blouse against a blue background.
The girl’s profile emerges distinctly from the cool shade of the background, drawing the viewer’s attention. Her gaze is fixed intensely to the side, as if focused on something beyond the confines of the painting itself. Despite the intensity of her stare, there is a sense of calmness in her expression. Standing upright with her head held high, she exudes a sense of pride. This posture is accentuated by her hair styled in a high chignon.
Unlike the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, the girl in my painting is not adorned with a pearl earring, nor is she dressed in an oriental costume. I called her Pearl Earring Lady as she appears in her modesty and simplicity, it looks as if she were adorned with pearl earrings. Her attire is simple, with a dark red blouse that serves as a strong foundation for the headpiece. The absence of a collar or neckline adds to the simplicity of her outfit, with only a touch of lighter red around the neck.
Johannes Vermeer was known for his meticulous approach to painting, spending a considerable amount of time on each piece. As a result, he completed only 36 paintings in his lifetime. Similarly, my painting has been a constant companion for several years, evolving and maturing over time. In this sense, I feel a connection with Vermeer, understanding the need for patience and time for a painting to reach its full potential.
The girl in the painting has reached her fullness without the need for pearl earrings, symbolising a sense of completeness and self-assurance. This image can be a companion for people who want to look boldly and calmly into the future, to have plans and hope for their fulfilment.
