About This Piece
A hilltop holds an air of mystery. It rises far above where we stand, and our eyes instinctively climb toward the summit — only to be thwarted, because the peak so often hides behind cloud or mist.
The only honest way to know it is to climb. And once you stand on the mountain itself, the summit is beneath your feet; you no longer crane upward but look down, and you can say you've conquered it. That triumph is real. Yet from the top a whole panorama of further peaks unfolds, standing in their majesty, utterly indifferent to our ambitions.
In the drawing the mountain takes a geometric form, dense earth on its slopes, sparse light catching the contours — and the summit still wrapped in darkness. What does it conceal up there? Perhaps when the sun rises, it will tell us.
An original drawing. Signed.
