About This Piece

A black rose is an anomaly. We picture roses in red, pink, white, regal purple — never in this deep velvet dark. And the rose carries such weight, given at weddings and birthdays and every occasion that matters, that black seems almost a contradiction. Do black roses even exist?

In my painting, one does. Its petals are cloaked in black against a golden ground, and that contrast — black on gold — turns it elegant rather than morbid: pure, minimal, modern. It's still a tribute to the rose's extraordinary form, only one that defies what we expect a rose to be.

That's really the invitation: to embrace the unconventional, to let something unexpected hold your attention. What a black rose means is for you to decide.

This one can wait for you on your wall. An original painting. Signed.
