About This Piece

We all look up at clouds and lose ourselves a little in them — their ever-changing forms, their whimsical drift across the sky. Strangely, for all that fascination, painters depict them far less often than they deserve; there are always so many earthly subjects demanding attention first.

This drawing came during a period of forced rest. With little else to do, I watched the sky for hours — the shifting constellations of cloud, sometimes a gathering storm — and saw them descend until they seemed to brush against the very ground. In those moments I couldn't shake the feeling of some higher power orchestrating the whole majestic display.

So I tried to catch that grandeur on a small sheet of paper: the monumental made intimate. My nature theme turned upward, toward awe.

An original drawing. Signed.
