About This Piece

The title imagines the clouds at play. And if it really is a game up there, then there must be rules — no game exists without them. As I write this I half-picture the clouds chuckling at the idea, if clouds can laugh. We're forever lending human feelings to things, as a way of describing our own.

Because every time I look up, the questions come. Why is one cloud so much larger than the rest? Why does the small one vanish into the embrace of the big one? Why is the sky sometimes one heavy blanket, and other times just a few tiny clouds drifting alone? Are they playing some cloudy game?

The meteorologists have their answers. But mine wanders off into a whimsical game among the clouds — and it's from exactly those flights of fancy that a drawing like this takes shape.

An original drawing. Signed.
