About This Piece

A cloudy night is usually thought of as pure darkness — streaks of cloud hiding the moon and stars, the only lights we have at night, until everything dissolves into a veil the eye can't pierce. To see anything at all, we need at least a glimmer.

But not every cloudy night is that absolute black you could paint with a single flat stroke. Some nights carry a gentle radiance, light slipping through the gaps between the clouds and revealing their ethereal shapes.

One cloud rules this one — jagged-edged, enormous, moving across the sky like a dragon in slow flight. It dominates the scene, as if it knows its grand procession ends only with the first light of morning. A fleeting, monumental beauty.

A drawing like this is a kind of lyricism: nature's night turned to feeling.

An original drawing. Signed.
