Dark Rose

This rose seems to want to disappear. In darkness we lose our sight — we need light bouncing off a thing to know its shape and colour, and at night the world simply fades to black. But this flower tries to hide even in broad daylight.

And it doesn't quite succeed. Vibrant, intense red keeps burning through the shroud of dark that wraps its outer petals. Its crimson heart only grows more vivid against the surrounding blackness — so the very effort to vanish has made it more mysterious, not less. Hiding has become its most magnetic quality.

Aren't roses always a little like that? Companions to so many moments of our lives, and never fully knowable. This is my nature theme as concealment and revelation: beauty that withholds itself, and is more beautiful for it.
