About This Piece
A flower in black and white, drawn in pen and ink. Is that the right way to show a flower, when flowers are all about colour? Maybe not — and that's the point.
I draw a flower the way an architect draws a building, following its structure: petals, stamens, pistils, the fragile geometry built to lure an insect and keep the whole cycle of pollination turning. Stripped of colour, that architecture stands clear and honest.
And what's missing becomes an invitation. No colour, no Monet lilies — only line. So the colour is left to you. Looking at it, you can imagine the reds, the yellows, the shade each petal might hold, and in your mind turn the black and white to colour.
That's the quiet collaboration I like: I give the form, you bring the rest.
An original pen-and-ink drawing. Signed.
