About This Piece
She isn't a portrait but a tronie — a painting of an imagined figure, a type rather than a person. A girl in a dark red collarless blouse against a cool blue ground, her profile emerging sharply from the shade. Her gaze fixes on something just beyond the frame: intense, and yet somehow calm. Head high, hair in a high chignon, she carries herself with quiet pride.
Unlike Vermeer's famous girl, she wears no pearl, no oriental costume. I named her Pearl Earring Lady because, in her plainness, she seems adorned anyway — completeness needs no jewel.
Vermeer finished only 36 paintings, taking his time with each. This one stayed with me for years, maturing slowly. In that patience I feel close to him.
She's a companion for anyone who wants to look calmly and boldly into the future.
An original painting, signed.
