About This Piece

The Beauty of Rainfall at Night

Rainfall at night has a special charm that cannot be compared to the rain that falls during the day. Daytime showers often disrupt our routines—forcing us into rainwear, wellington boots, and umbrellas that are easy to misplace or forget. While necessary, rain during the day is rarely convenient. Yet, we cannot ignore its importance: rain sustains plants, animals, and ultimately, our own lives.

Rain, Drought, and the Balance of Nature

When rain is absent for too long, the word drought appears, carrying with it fear and unease. Sunny skies lose their joy when they persist without relief. Then, even inconvenient showers become a blessing. We welcome the rain, whispering to ourselves that nature has finally remembered balance. Still, daily life quickly reminds us of umbrellas left at home and shoes soaked in puddles.

The Magic of Heavy Rainfall at Night

Heavy rainfall at night, however, offers something altogether different. It does not intrude on errands or commutes. Instead, it accompanies us quietly, often from the safety of our verandas or windows.

There is a profound serenity in listening to the steady rhythm of raindrops under the veil of darkness. The moon, glimpsed through the curtain of falling drops, creates a scene both mysterious and enchanting. These moments feel almost like poetry—perfect occasions for reflection or creativity.

Drawing Rainfall in Pen and Ink

For artists, such nights are an invitation to create. A simple rainfall drawing in pen and ink can capture the atmosphere with striking elegance.

Raindrops descending against silhouetted trees form a composition that is both easy and deeply expressive. Black ink highlights the contrast of light and shadow, while fine pen strokes suggest the delicate, endless movement of rain. This minimal approach not only captures the scene but also reflects the purity of the night itself.

Rainfall as a Nocturne

In art, nighttime paintings belong to the tradition of nocturnes. Many great artists have explored them, and my own rainfall drawings belong to this lineage. Leonora Carrington, for instance, continues to inspire with her dreamlike visions. Each nocturne holds the potential to reveal a world unseen by daylight. My rainfall art, whether drawing or painting, seeks to capture that quiet, luminous mystery.

The Ever-Changing Landscape

Every kind of weather reshapes the landscape with its own beauty. Sunshine, mist, storm, or rainfall—all invite us to see differently. Yet the question always returns: how to draw rainfall? Perhaps the answer lies not in technique alone, but in the ability to feel its rhythm, especially when it falls gently, endlessly, and beautifully at night.
