About This Piece

Is "Stonehenge" too bold a name for such a small picture? Maybe. But stand at certain Scandinavian lakes and you'll understand. Their shores are rock, their beds are rock, and in the shallows little stone islands break the surface in clusters — archipelagos that look, for all the world, like the tops of a sunken circle of standing stones.

So the imagination does the rest. You picture the people who were here before us. Maybe the land looked different then; maybe this was a place of worship. Who would have hauled and arranged those stones, and why? The questions have no answers, and perhaps never will. That not-knowing is the whole feeling of the piece.

This is my landscape theme working as it should: observed nature tipping into something emotional, mysterious, and old.

An original painting, built on light and shadow. Signed.

Jolanta
