About This Piece

The title points to a woman's grey eyes — which you never actually see. I do that on purpose: I want you looking closely, at the painting and at its title, completing what isn't shown.

She belongs to a series about solitary people, women and men alone with themselves. I built her silhouette from many separate pieces, so she isn't flawlessly perfect — and that's the point. The imperfection is our human nature. The grey enveloping her is made of countless shades, delicate streaks like a stream of thoughts, worries, or memories. What they are, I leave to you.

And her closed eyes? Perhaps grey too. What's certain is the black at her core, where her deepest secrets are kept — held tight in her hands, guarded from any prying eye.

A monotype on Fabriano paper, hand-finished — one of a kind. Signed.

Jolanta
