Holy Family

What holds a family together is invisible. This small sculpture is my attempt to give it a shape.

You can read it in religious terms — a nativity, with the aluminium star hung above it beneath a Christmas tree — or simply as a tribute to something universal: family, parenthood, the bond between those who care for a new life. Both readings are right. The work holds both, and it does not argue with itself.

I cut the figures from 5 mm aluminium and set them in cherry wood — a metal that keeps its clarity and a wood that warms with age. After four decades of painting people and nature, I wanted this bond to exist as an object you can hold in your hands. It is not an ornament; it is a quiet companion that changes meaning with the seasons — a nativity in December, a family the rest of the year.
