About This Piece

On a grey autumn day, or in the slow tail of winter, a hot summer night is exactly what we dream of. The thought of one helps us endure the lingering frost, the last patches of snow, the longing for warmth.

And when summer finally comes and the sun heats mercilessly for weeks, it's the night that turns magical. As dusk blurs the contours of the burning day, the air cools and everything begins again. I like to sit out on my veranda and listen to the cicadas — my private orchestra, playing, I imagine, just for me.

The painting is dominated by red, the hottest colour in my palette, set against small touches of cool tones that make the red burn hotter still. The warmth seems to vibrate in the dusk.

It's my attempt to stop that moment. An abstract oil on canvas. Signed.

Jolanta
