Tree Trunk Study

The idea came on a quiet walk through the forest, when my eye caught on the trunks — that intricate bark wrapping the tree's whole lifeline between root and crown.

Each species dresses differently: some smooth, some deeply furrowed. In my forest the pines dominate, their bark dark brown near the ground and lightening as it climbs, until at sunset the brown turns to vibrant orange. In that light the trunks become luminous torches — and yet nothing is burning. They simply seem to hold light of their own, warmth seeping through the crevices in the bark, illuminating every line of the structure.

That's what I wanted to catch: the ordinary trunk made radiant. I build the image up from small pieces, the way the bark itself is built.
