About This Piece
A flower stripped to black and white, drawn in pen and ink. The wrong technique for something whose whole glory is colour? Perhaps. But take the colour away and what remains is pure structure — and structure is what holds me.
I draw a flower the way an architect draws a building, absorbed in its design: petals, stamens, pistils, the fragile machinery built to draw an insect close and keep the cycle of pollination turning. On the page, that architecture stands clear and honest, with nothing to distract from it.
No colour, no Monet lilies — only line. So the colour is left to you. You can let your eye, or your imagination, turn the black and white back into bloom.
I give the form; you bring the rest. An original pen-and-ink drawing. Signed.
