About This Piece
A woman asleep, drawn in pen and ink — divided, almost folded in half to fit within the edges of the page. The division isn't just composition: I wanted the swirling patterns of sleep to move through her whole body, carrying her somewhere else.
Because that's what deep sleep is. In dreams the laws of nature fall away — gravity lets go, you rise and watch the world from above, your sense of what's possible expands. The body finds complete rest, safe as a shelter, and the face softens until a small smile appears.
That softened, untroubled face was what I wanted to catch. Not a fairy-tale beauty but the real, quiet beauty of someone wholly at peace.
I'm left wondering how she wakes — or whether she'd rather stay in the dream.
