About This Piece
This painting owes a debt to Cézanne. In his still lifes he never fussed over the texture of wood or the skin of a fruit — he showed their essence, building each object from simple geometry and flat patches of colour. A peach became a sphere, a pear a cone, a jug a cylinder. It was radical in its day, and it made him the father of modern painting.
Here I turn that approach on a landscape. The land simplified into shapes — not hidden inside objects but stated openly, boldly, left for you to read your own associations into.
That openness is the appeal. Geometric forms are neutral and universal; they speak across every language and border. This is my landscape theme pushed all the way toward abstraction — observed nature distilled to pattern and structure.
A small original oil. Signed.
Jolanta
