About This Piece

Her identity is carried instead by the body — and what a body: yellow as late sun, mapped with lines that could be cracks, or veins, or the seams of something repaired.

What stops you are the hands. Blue, like the world around her. At first you read them as hers, reaching outward. Then the blue deepens and you're less certain — is she reaching into the world, or is the world reaching into her? The boundary between figure and ground has quietly dissolved, and you realize it may never have been solid.

The background carries its own history: scratched, layered, marked — as though this blue has been lived in for a long time before she arrived in it.

She is monumental and fractured at once. Both things, fully, without resolution. That's not a contradiction the painting asks you to solve.
