The Gray Man

The Gray Man

The Gray Man

The gray man does not stand out. Instead, he walks quietly among us, wrapped in the anonymity of grey — a colour that blends into the background, that neither offends nor excites. Indeed, grey is neutrality, calm, balance. Consequently, the gray man chooses it, or perhaps is chosen by it. His strategy is one of safety: to remain unseen, undisturbed, untouched. However, there is a cost. In fact, the life of the gray man is uneventful. Not miserable, but not memorable either. Thus, he lives in the in-between — not dark, not light, simply grey.

Avoiding extremes

This is not uncommon. Moreover, the gray people, the ones who avoid extremes and keep to themselves, are the majority. Their lives, therefore, follow quiet routines. Additionally, their hopes are whispered, not shouted. Nevertheless, that does not mean they are empty. I believe that even the gray man carries something — a memory, a dream, a wish for connection. Perhaps he longs for someone. Alternatively, perhaps he remembers someone who is no longer there. In any case, he leans inwards, cradling this invisible treasure.

Still, grey is not always quiet. Sometimes, the monotony breaks. Sometimes, even a gray man cries out. Once, in Warsaw, in 2017, such a man — Piotr Szczęsny — stepped out of the silence. He shouted through action. His intuition was sharp; he saw what was coming. What he feared is now the world we live in. For a moment, his grey turned bright. He was heard. And remembered.

Man in my picture is silent

But not all gray men shout. Mine does not. He stares calmly ahead. He is not lost — just silent. There is depth in his stillness. He embraces something, not visibly, but with his hands drawn close, protectively. It might be a memory, or a future he hopes for. I wonder if the one he dreams of walks beside him now, quietly, in grey too. Or are they only present in his mind?

In this art print, I try to see the gray man, not overlook him. I try to listen to what his silence holds. His life might seem ordinary, but it contains riddles — subtle, emotional, human. I invite you to look closer. Notice him. Wonder with me: what does he hold so close? Who does he long for? And might he, one day, speak again?
