About This Piece
This image is of a bird whose wish was to hide. Did it succeed? Judge for yourself. I felt a kind of satisfaction when painting this picture. I felt like telling my hero that it would not succeed in hiding in its meadow bird box, as it was visible anyway.
The eye.
It doesn't hide the way the rest of the body does. It looks back — dark, ringed in pink, absolutely still at the center of all that movement. The bird has dissolved into the meadow everywhere except where it chooses not to. That one point of presence, held deliberately against the camouflage, changes everything.
There is a kind of wisdom in knowing when to disappear and when to be seen. In understanding that visibility is a choice, not a condition. This small bird has worked it out. It is entirely hidden and entirely present at once — and it knows the difference.
