About This Piece
The meadow is the hare's home, and home is where we feel safe. But is the hare truly safe there? It won't tell us. The honest answer is probably both yes and no — the field offers food and tall grasses to vanish into, and that hiding is the hare's whole defence.
So in the painting he has nearly disappeared, taking on the very green around him. Only one thing betrays him: a dark, sharp eye, looking straight out at you.
I hope you look back with sympathy. I'd like us to say to him: don't pretend — we see you, we know the trick. Because we all know it. How often we long to become invisible, to close our eyes and believe we aren't there.
Even Dürer painted his hare. Mine just wants to hide. An original painting. Signed.
