Butterfly Yellow

A summer meadow is a dense carpet of green dotted with flowers, and above it float little moving points of colour — butterflies. It's one of nature's most ordinary spectacles, which is exactly why we miss it. You have to stop, give it time, and watch: how the butterfly circles, how it settles on one particular bloom.

And there's the question I can't answer — why that flower and not another? The scientists might know, after long patient observation. The butterfly itself won't tell. So I stay in the realm of my own guesses.

In this painting, my yellow butterfly has chosen a red flower half-hidden in the grass. To reach it, it has to cross a green obstacle. I wish it success.

I could happily paint every butterfly I see — but there are so many other corners of nature still waiting.
