Blue Alchemy

Some silences you have to earn. This painting is about that kind of blue.

I think of it as alchemy, because the blue isn't simply laid onto the canvas — it has to be drawn out, transmuted. The painting begins with brown: the earth, a dense and solid foundation. Then blue seeps in by small increments, layer by layer, until it breaks free and flows — water rising through the ground. Without water the earth is barren; with it, life begins. And over everything, the blue of the sky reigns. Earth, water and sky, held in one frame.

Blue alone wouldn't say this. A whole canvas of it would say nothing. The colour only reveals its depth against its opposite — the warm brown that lets the cool blue breathe. When you stand before the painting, look at the border where the two meet: that narrow zone where earth becomes water is where the whole painting happens. Everything above it is release.

This is a large semi-abstract landscape in oil — not a place you could find on a map, but the feeling of land, water and sky: tranquility, introspection, vastness. I painted it in 2010, and it is one of those works that has never stopped being true; people who live with paintings like this tell me they find something different in them each year.

Some see a horizon at dawn. Some see rain finally reaching dry ground. One visitor saw grief slowly giving way. All of these are right — the painting holds them.
