Earth and the Sun

On a walk, look down. Crouch, give it a moment of your attention, and the ground stops being ground — it becomes a dense structure of specks and shapes, a composition with no beginning and no end. Hidden treasure underfoot, the kind we step over every day.

That's where this painting lives: in the soil we walk on, warmed briefly by a summer sun. I wanted to keep that warmth — to carry it into autumn and winter, when the earth has gone cold.

Like all my landscapes, it isn't scenery but feeling. Observed ground tips toward abstraction, revealing the patterns and rhythms of growing things. The light shifts across it through the day, so the surface keeps changing — never quite the same painting twice.
