About This Piece
Stand alone by the ocean and the first thing it gives you is your own smallness. Its power is simply its size — a vastness the eye can't take in, more than the mind can hold.
But that's not what fills me when I'm actually there, stretched out on a blanket in the sun. Alone with the ocean becomes something intimate. I surrender to the breeze, let the rhythm of the waves quiet my thoughts, and drift off into a kind of waking dream, carried on the ebb and flow. The ocean works like a benevolent wizard, coaxing you to lie back on its sun-warmed shore.
This painting tries to hold both: the immensity, and that surrender to it. A separate kingdom, teeming and alive, just past the breaking waves.
